St. Vincent de Paul Society
The Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) Society meets fortnightly on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at the hall at 1 Caesar’s Camp Road. The meetings have a formal agenda with prayers, spiritual readings and contemplation to enable us to make the right decisions and support each other when there are special needs.
Each member decides how much time they are able to devote to visiting and work by visiting in pairs either on a regular basis or a short period depending on the need.
The SVP is there to help anybody in need. It visits people at home, in hospital, in residential homes, the housebound, the elderly, the bereaved, those in poor health, indeed anyone who needs our support.
In the parish, the SVP have provided help with decorating, furniture, gardening, repairs, holidays, pilgrimage to Lourdes, in fact most things that are urgent will be considered providing there is funding. Generally, only one-off help is given to prevent people becoming dependent.
The Society welcomes new members both men, women. In Camberley & Bagshot the SVP is ecumenical and is open to Christians of other denominations. It also needs auxiliary members who are not able to find time to attend meetings but who are in a position to devote some time to help. Recently the local SVP has linked with the Camberley Rotary Club to bring furniture to those in acute need. In short this is ‘active Christianity’. They were also blessed with the gift of a Van from a private donor. Many fit young helpers are now needed to maintain and continue this vital work.
Furniture Project
Our SVP group is presently working to make furnitutre available to families in need. Items of furniture are being collected and a project has been started to find a suitable site to store it before it is delivered to people who need it. SVP is in partnership with The Rotary Club and the Lions in this project.
